Apart from the typical side effects such as vomiting and nausea, there are rare cases of severe allergy and skin reactions which results from using Tamiflu. In such situations, it is advisable to avoid the medication and consult a doctor before resuming the regular doses. Flu patients, especially preteens and adolescent, often run high risks of self-injury and confusion after taking Tamiflu, and should be kept under constant supervision to ensure safety. Any signs of abnormal behavior should be reported immediately to healthcare personnel.
In addition, the following precautions should be taken when under a dose of Tamiflu:
- Generally, Tamiflu is not prescribed to pregnant and nursing women, since its effects on the unborn or newborns are not known. A patient should consult an expert physician in such conditions before taking any medication.
- Allergy to oseltamivir phosphate or other constituents of Tamiflu may cause violent reactions in a patient, and thus it is not recommended for people who are allergic to the ingredients of Tamiflu.
- A doctor should be consulted if a patient has kidney problems, which can exacerbate due to Tamiflu.
- Tamiflu should not be used along with vaccines such as Flumist, as there is a probability of interference between the two medications.
