The Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS) is a very rare disorder, which causes the immune system in the body of humans to attack their own peripheral nervous system. It is typically a disease that makes the body damage its very own cells, which connect the spinal cord and brain to the rest of the body. This results in weakening of the muscles, and sometimes, in very severe cases, the disease may even caue a person to become paralyzed. The Guillain-Barre syndrome is also called Acute idiopathic polyneuritis or Acute inflammatory polyneuropathy.
No one knows exactly what causes this syndrome, but it is quite a dangerous disease as it makes the nerves unable to transmit signals to and from the brain, therefore making the body muscles unable to respond to the brain. This syndrome could possibly be triggered by a surgery, vaccination or infection.
Because the GBS is likely to have been triggered by a possible infection or vaccination, people who have had influenza or have been vaccinated with an Influenza vaccine are at a risk of getting this disease. However, studies show that only a single person out of a possible one million people who get vaccinated, may have GBS associated with the vaccine that they are given. Also, most people are able to recover from the GBS even if some may experience permanent damage to the brain. Recovery takes around a few weeks to perhaps, a few years.
