What Are the Home Remedies for Treating Colds in Children?

The common cold is a type of illness that can most easily be treated at home without the need of professional medical help. We can almost say that it is a very insignificant type of viral infection that causes no serious harm to a child, unless of course, it is in the case of a newborn baby.
In most cases, you can easily treat an older child’s case of common cold at home by considering a few of the following suggestions:

  • Thin the mucus. The common cold usually causes your child’s mucus to come out green and thicker than usual. In this case, you can use saline nose drops to make the thick mucus slightly thinner. Prevent dehydration. It is really important to prevent dehydration when your child has a cold. Ensure that he or she receives proper fluid intake by feeding him or her sufficient amounts of liquids in the form of energy drinks or fruit juices. If your baby is still breastfed then continue breastfeeding regularly as breast milk keeps the baby completely protected from germs which cause colds.
Keep the baby’s nose clean. In order to clear out the thick mucus from your child’s nose that blocks the nasal passage, simply use a suction bulb or rubber-bulb syringe. You simply have to squeeze the syringe to expel air, put the tip into the baby’s nostril and release the bulb to suck out all the mucus form the nose. Afterward, remove the bulb, empty the mucus contents on to a tissue paper and clean the syringe with water and soap.
