Nasal Flu Vaccine 101

Among the 2 types of flu vaccines, the nasal vaccine is considered to be safer option as they contain a milder form of the virus, and they have a very low and softer take on the side-effects. Studies have shown that it is highly effective among children aged between 2 and 7, as it successfully reduces the chance of influenza by 92%. The success rate is not so high among adults, but it usually helps to lessen the respiratory discomfort.

The nasal flu vaccines, also known as LAIV, have a weaker version of the influenza virus as opposed to the strong ones in flu shots. It is usually recommended for people who are at low risk of getting the flu or exhibiting very mild symptoms of the flu.

The nasal flu vaccine is highly prohibited for children under 2, adults over 50, pregnant women and people with weak immune systems. It also should not be taken if you are taking aspirin, as it may have a cross-reaction.

Since the nasal flu vaccine is less intense than the traditional injection vaccines, the side-effects are very mild as well. They can range from mild fevers to headaches or light nausea. These effects usually wear off in 2 to 3 days.

Even though nasal flu vaccine seems like a safer choice, it is best to consult a physician to know what vaccine you should get from a professional point of view.
