How does Flu Spread?

The most common way a flu virus is spread is through direct contact. It can also be passed if someone breathes in the droplets released when an infected person sneezes or coughs.

As many people don’t know, contact with a flu virus can happen in many different ways. But the virus can only enter your system through the eyes, nose or mouth. If your loved one is sick, it is better to ease off on the kissing for a while if you do not want to get sick.

You can pick up flu virus residue from almost any object. If a sick person sneezes or coughs into their hands and then touches an object, the virus can live on that object for hours. That is plenty of time for someone else to pick up the object, as well as the virus. Shaking hands with a sick person can also have the same effect, with the virus left on your hand and entering your body if you touch your face.

It is possible to transfer the virus to a person even before you understand that you are affected. Adults can contaminate others a day before the symptoms show up, and throughout the period of being sick. Children can transfer the virus for an even longer time.
