What complications can arise from Seasonal Flu?

While most people suffer from the usual case of influenza during the flu season, there is a heavy chance of flu related complication for a lot of individuals. Each year several deaths occur due to these complications. Even though they seem very harmful, they can be easily cured by bed rest, antibiotics and heavy intake of fluids.

Pneumonia has to be the most common case of complication. It can either be viral or bacterial. Sometimes pneumonia can take a huge toll on the body and the patient may be required to be hospitalized. Symptoms for pneumonia includes very high fever with shivers, cough, runny nose with green or bloody mucus, pale skin due to lack of oxygen and most importantly shortness of breath or chest pain while breathing. It is best advised to consult a doctor immediately if the flu seems to be too intense.

Other complications that may arise from flu are sinus infection; break down of respiratory syndrome and worsening of pre existing chronic illness such as heart disease or asthma.

Complications in the Central Nervous System in Children occur sometimes usually to infants under 1 year old. However this complication may occur to children up to 5 years of age as well.

Getting the flu vaccine is the best way to avoid such complication that may leave even the healthiest person to be very weak and fragile.
