When is it necessary to get emergency medic al attention in case of flu or cold?

A person suffering from cold needs to pay a visit to his or her doctor – immediately – in the following conditions: 1. A fever that does not get well: This is a sign that the infection responsible for the flu or cold is still present. 2. Pain while swallowing: This may occur from soreness of the throat – a symptom common in all types of flu or cold. However, extreme difficulty while swallowing indicates strep throat. This needs immediate care from the doctor. 3. Constant coughing: Although coughing is a common symptom in cold and flu, it tends to get well after a period of one week. If it does not alleviate – even after three weeks have passed, it can be a sign of an imminent danger – such as bronchitis, sinusitis and asthma. As a result, care of the doctor must be sought to get an antibiotic that can reduce the coughing. 4. Constant blocking of the nose and headaches: Both these symptoms may be a sign of sinus infection – which required immediate medical care. Other warning signs include eye pain and thick discharge from the noses. In addition, adults should be wary of the following symptoms: extreme pain around the chest, difficulty in catching breath, fatigue, extreme headache, continuous vomiting and difficulty in paying attention. On the other hand, parents need to seek immediate medical care if they seek the following symptoms in their children: very fast breathing, having difficulty in catching breath, a rash accompanying a fever, fatigue, mood swings and irritation. If these symptoms exacerbate and the skin turns into blue, it becomes even more worrisome.
