Why Is There a Shortage of Children’s Flu Shots?

The ongoing crisis of flu shots is deemed to be more of a delay in supplying flu shots rather than an actual shortage. The issue that has given rise to this predicament is that Sanofi pastuer, the company responsible for producing Fluzone flu shots, had faced some problems in the manufacturing process, which has hindered the supply of adequate amount of Fluzone flu shots to be available on the market.
This is definitely a setback, since Fluzone flu shots are the only ones that can be prescribed to children under the age of 3 years. Despite being the only type of flu shot available for children of that age range, Fluzone flu shots are also used for 4 year kids and in most cases, these the only vaccines pediatricians prefer. That is why most pediatricians do not have any flu shots available for four year old asthmatic patients. The situation would have been different had the pediatricians ordered other additional flu shots for kids older than 3. However, Sanofi Pasteur has firmly assured that they would be bringing in new supplies by the end of October which would allow most children to receive their flu shots safely, well before the flu season reaches a peak.
